Which course is right for me?

Boat Electrics Course

MET 1

MET 1 is ideal for boat owners, skippers and crew, or trainee marine electricians who just need to get started learning about the marine electrical system. The course covers in great detail the 'standard option' basic electrical components, distribution and charging system in line with relevant standards from around the world. If you're not sure where to start - or how deeply you wish to dive into the topic - the MECO Boat Electrics MET 1 course is a great entry point. After the course learners will understand the basics, and be able to find and fix faults, and perform like for like repairs. There is no assumed knowledge, we start from the most basic principles of 'electrical theory' and build from there.

Marine Electrical Course

MET 1 & 2

The MET 2 course package includes the MET 1 so you get the same beginner-friendly level and the essential basics nailed down first. The MET 2 section then takes learners much deeper into more sophisticated electrical systems, and in addition expands upon the subjects covered from the MET 1 to a higher more nuanced level. If you want to get into the industry, or if you're a skipper of a vessel with more than a basic electrical system - the MET 1 & 2 package may be for you.

Marine Electronics Course

MET 1, 2, & 3

The MET 3 Masterclass Package includes the MET 1, 2 & 3 and takes learners step by step through the finer points of both the marine electrical and electronics systems including NMEA 0183, NMEA 2000, and NMEA OneNet - and much more. This has been referred to by experienced marine electronics technicians as 'the most detailed yet easy-to-follow marine electronics resource'. If you are looking to get started in the industry or have your own vessel with networked electronics then this may be the best option for you.

Standards & Accreditations


ABYC Standards

MECO MET 1 and MET 2 courses are developed in accordance with ABYC E-11 Marine Electrical Standards, while MECO MET 4 is based on ABYC E-13 standards.

The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) is a non-profit organisation that develops internationally recognised marine safety standards. As an ABYC member, MECO Training is committed to delivering training that reflects current industry best practice.


MECO is proud to be a member of the British Marine Federation, reflecting our commitment to professionalism, quality, and industry best practice. For our learners, it provides added confidence that they're training with a trusted organisation dedicated to high standards and continuous improvement.


ISO Standards

MECO MET 1 and MET 2 courses are developed in accordance with BS EN ISO 13297 + Amendment 1:2022 (Small Craft – DC and AC Electrical Systems). MECO MET 4 is based on BS EN ISO 23625:2025 (Lithium-ion Battery Installations).

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) develops globally recognised standards that promote safety, quality, and consistency. By aligning our courses with these standards, MECO Training ensures learners receive training that reflects current international best practice.


IEC Standards

In addition to ISO and ABYC - MECO MET 2 is developed in accordance with IEC 60092-507:2014 for three-phase AC electrical systems and AC & DC electrical installations on vessels over 24 metres. In these applications, IEC standards are generally used in place of, or in addition to, ISO and ABYC standards.

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) develops and publishes internationally recognised electrical standards for a wide range of industries, including the commercial marine sector. By aligning this part of the course with IEC standards, MECO Training ensures learners receive training that reflects current international best practice for larger and more complex vessels.


NMEA Standards

MECO MET 3 is developed in accordance with the NMEA 0400 Installation Standard for marine electronics and NMEA 2000® networks.

The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) develops internationally recognised standards for the installation and interfacing of marine electronic systems. As an NMEA member, MECO Training is committed to delivering training that reflects current industry best practice for modern onboard electronics.


CPD Accreditation

Every MECO course is independently reviewed and accredited by the CPD Certification Service.

The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Certification Service independently assesses training providers to ensure their courses meet recognised standards of quality and educational value. As a CPD-accredited training provider, MECO Training is committed to delivering professionally developed courses that have been independently assessed for content, instruction, assessment, and educational integrity.

A Multi-Standard Approach

Unlike many training providers that focus on a single standard, MECO Training teaches the principles and requirements of multiple internationally recognised marine standards. This enables learners to understand where standards align, where they differ, and how to apply them correctly in real-world situations.

In practice, many vessels are subject to more than one standard. For example, a vessel under 24 metres fitted with a three-phase shore power system and modern NMEA 2000® electronics may require compliance with ISOIEC, and NMEAstandards simultaneously. Understanding how these standards interact is an essential skill for today's marine technicians.
