The company

MECO provides professional, accredited marine electrical and electronics training courses suitable for beginners, boat owners, and marine technicians. Courses start from first principles and build towards real-world, standards-based competence.

Founded in 2017 by David Punch, MECO grew out of a lifetime at sea and a professional background in marine electrical work and skipper instruction. Through years of hands-on experience, it became clear that many capable operators and technicians were working with increasingly complex electrical systems without a structured understanding of how those systems functioned, how faults develop, or why industry standards exist.

MECO training courses are fully online, self paced, structured, and based on the systems you actually find on board, and a suitable frame of reference based on the size of the vessel, flag, type of system, and nature of use.

The courses evolved from a shore based courses aimed at beginners, and all packages are based in this same concept that everything must be covered from scratch - even if learners have the basics, a refresher of the electrical essentials is never a bad thing, and for many these early sections are where the penny drops.

MECO courses focus on how marine electrical systems behave under load and fault conditions, how to fault-find safely and methodically, and how to work within recognised standards such as ABYC, ISO, NMEA and beyond into IEC, IMO, and class rules for the MET 4 levels. The emphasis is on genuine understanding rather than memorisation or guesswork.

The courses

The MET 1 course is designed to start off from the very beginning and requires no previous experience, and provides a foundation for the higher Met 2 and MET 3 courses that leave no stone unturned in the highest marine electronics training levels available online. The addition of the MALIBAS course finishes the job and leads to MET 4 Unlimited certification.

While MECO courses were originally aimed at boat owners and skippers, the programme has evolved beyond recognition. Now the MECO MET 1, MET 2, MET 3 and Li-ion MALIBAS certifications (available now as one MET 4 Fast Track package) are accredited courses and internationally recognised as one of the top industry standards for marine electrical and electronics technicians.

MECO courses are available for anyone, around half our learners are simply seeking to build confidence in their own systems, with the others working to develop skills and formally certify and log their expertise and experience.

In order to work in the industry technicians must be suitably trained and experienced for the nature of the work they undertake. MECO takes these industry requirements very seriously and as such the latest MET 4 package includes highly detailed basics to advance training for all marine electrical & electronics work, but in addition, the Met 4 also includes a comprehensive, in-field, task-by-task skills-logging service. This enables learners to officially evidence BOTH training and experience for the specific tasks whilst they are training, you can start logging from day one, and even log any valid prior experience too.

The people

MECO's range of self paced courses maintain direct instructor involvement. David continues to personally support any struggling students throughout their courses, and their application ensuring that questions are answered clearly and learning is grounded in real-world experience. We also have a small team comprising of admin, OfQual trained auditor, instructors, examiners, developers, and technical advisors too.
